I’m more sympathetic to Linda than the OP is, but all the same, this is all basically true.
Raising two kids without a partner is fucking hard, especially when one kid has a disability. Also, it doesn’t seem like Micke is paying child support, so Linda is completely on her own financially as well as emotionally and physically. Shes probably exhausted much of the time.
Nonetheless, Linda does make some exceptionally poor parenting choices, not only with Sara but also with Simon. So it’s not just that parenting a neurodivergent teen is hard for her, parenting her neurotypical teen is also a disaster when he gets into trouble. Which suggests Sara’s neurodivergence is not the problem.
She completely abdicates responsibility for the tutoring bill, and her 16 year old son starts dealing drugs to pay it. Where the fuck did she think he was getting that kind of money from? She should ground Simon and then call Hillerska to set up a payment plan on the bill. Instead she just yells, and then fails to ask even the most basic questions when he could suddenly pay the bill himself despite not having a part time job.
I can empathize with where Linda’s coming from but still acknowledge she could seriously use to take some parenting classes. Or at least get into family therapy with her kids.
My issue with Linda is that she seems to parent based on her feelings and only her feelings.
When she doesn’t feel like parenting, she doesn’t. When she feels offended that Sara needs new riding pants, she lashes out and tells her Marieberg, the school where she was bullied so badly she felt the need to drop out, was better for her because it was more diverse. When she feels like Sara doesn’t socialize enough, she pesters her kids about it until Simon starts selling drugs to make her feel better. When she feels out of her depth with their emotions, she lets them handle it themselves. When she feels like realism is morally wrong, she tries to keep the rose-colored glasses on her grown-ass kids who are directly affected by that reality.
She never thinks about what’s best for her kids or what they need her to do. It’s always about her feelings. That’s why Simon experiences so much adultification and Sara is so infantilized, because their mom won't do her job properly. Simon has to take care of the three of them, and her fear due to Sara's disability means she's coddled against her will and doesn't get to make her own choices.

Though Young Royals is primarily about imperfect teenagers, it is also about imperfect parents. It's about generational trauma and the breaking of those cycles to choose the life they want to lead. "We can't choose what lives we are born into," says Boris "but we can choose how to live our lives".
All five of the lead characters' parents have impactful stories. Micke is my favourite for how he tells Sara, (paraphrasing) "You may have inherited my diagnosis, but you are not me (so you won't end up making my mistakes)."
Whereas the Queen, Poppe, and Smysan want Wille and Felice to be just like them. Felice breaks from being who her mum wants her to be in season one. She then breaks from what her dad expects her to do (conform to the white environment and work ten times as hard to be as good) by being honest about the school he loves and stopping the conforming cycle.
August's dad was a drug addict and took his own life. There's a hope in season 3 that August has become aware of his own mental health struggles and has started to open up to a therapist. We don't see him take any drugs as coping mechanisms is season 3. Maybe he will break the cycle and overcome the trauma of his dad's death.
Simon accepts his imperfect parents. He gives his mum grace for putting up with their troubles with their dad. He wants to have a relationship with his dad and goes to him for help even though he is wary of him. But, he doesn't drink or take drugs at all, probably because his dad did. He 'deals with' and protects his sister in areas where his mum is not able to. He gives them all second chances. He accepts their failings but doesn't duplicate them in his own life. He chooses differently in his own life.
Wille's struggle is probably the hardest of them all because, as Sara says in Season 1, "Isn't that the point of the Royal Family? That they do not change." The RF's cycle of generational trauma is so rigid and long standing. There is no blueprint for what Wille is trying to do to break the cycle. Choosing not to be like his mum and his brother is monumental and unprecedented. As Simon said in season 1, "You are brave".
Some of the time in YR, we as an audience defend the teenagers for their mistakes because of their age. But the reality is, that even the adults make mistakes. Because they're human.

Things I want to see happen in Season 3 of Young Royals, in no particular order.
1. August’s body dysmorphia and eating disorder addressed. Not because I want any kind of redemption arc for him (I don’t!), but because he’s a human being with an undiagnosed illness. Even if he’s a louse.
2. So, Sara has stopped boarding at Hillerska and gone back home. I want to see Simon unable to even look at her without feeling betrayed. And I want Linda to pick up on the fact that her kids hate each other right now, even if they don’t tell her why. Linda was remarkably unobservant in S2. Also, it suddenly occurs to me why they had Sara turn 18 in S2. So she could make a statement about August’s actions without Linda having to be there. If Sara’s no longer a minor, she doesn’t need a parent chaperoning her to a police interview.
3. Felice to get an actual storyline of her own. Felice is glorious, but she spent all of S2 being Wille’s Emotional Support Human, with occasional breaks where she got to talk about her horse. She needs a story! Not necessarily a romance, but some kind of plot. We could bring back her mother. Smysan Ehrencrona would be livid if she found out Felice had it within her power to sex up the Crown Prince (in 2.03) and didn’t do so.
4. Micke. Not because I think he’s a good dad, he’s clearly anything but. But now Simon and Wille are public, I think someone from the tabloids will track down Mr Eriksson Sr and it’ll be a car crash of an interview.
5. Jan-Olof and Simon interacting. In any way.
I’m sure I’ll think of more later.

no bc I just realized sara's relationship with august is becoming linda's marriage with micke. from what we know of linda and micke, they were together while micke's alcoholism and addiction spiralled downhill, and they eventually divorced, although sara thinks her mother should have divorced micke sooner, because "he's a bad person who can't take care of himself, while everyone around him suffers for it." simon argues that she stayed with him to protect them and ensure they'd still have a home.
everything that we know about linda and micke's relationship and subsequent seperation is literally a direct parallel to sara and august. august might mean well when they first started properly dating, but he' s a bad person who relies on pills to cope with having to take care of himself alone, and starts bringing down everyone close to him during season one and two. sara originally thinks he's a good person, despite everything she knows he's done, and keeps his secrets to protect him, herself, and in her eyes, simon. even in their breakup, she should have left august sooner to avoid hurting her brother and her friends, but she thought she could protect all of them. she's becoming everything she hated about her parents' relationship, which is interesting considering she applied to be a boarder to escape the life she supposedly couldn't stand.

Yes. Exactly! If you call it "eldest daughter syndrome" it doesn't catch the parentified children who AREN'T eldest daughters. Like Simon Eriksson, who has a neurodivergent older sister, an addict father, and has been "the man of the house" for his fairly passive mother probably since long before her divorce. If you look only at birth order and gender, this one would pass you by. It would also pass you by that Sara Eriksson, as an eldest daughter, could be infantilized by her family.
The more I see the phrase “eldest daughter syndrome” the higher it raises my hackles. It’s just parentification. It’s parentification and if you call it parentification it’s a lot easier to explain, and it’s a lot easier for the younger siblings or only children and children of any gender to identify it happening to them too.
Like I get that oldest sibs are more likely to be treated as accessory parents of their youngers, and I get that in a lot of families girls are pushed into caregiver roles, but fucking hell man parentification can and does happen to any kid regardless of birth order and gender, and while situations vary from family to family, there isn’t really anything the parentified oldest daughters are experiencing that the other parentified kids aren’t.

The Parentification of Simon Eriksson
Fair warning this is gonna be a sad post (it's my brand at this point lol), I'm sorry besties.
Parentification: the process of role reversal whereby a child or adolescent is obliged to act as parent to their own parent or sibling
The parentification of a child often occurs when the child's physical and/or emotional needs are not met because a parent has a physical or emotional impairment such as:
The parent has an alcohol or substance use disorder.
The parent or a sibling is disabled or has a serious medical condition
The parents are divorced or one parent has died.
The parents are immigrants and have difficulty integrating into society
These are not all of the ways parentification of a child occurs, but they are reasons why Simon's parentification happened. Micke abuses drugs and alcohol. Sara has ADHD and autism, and was bullied because of it. Linda got divorced from Micke (and not soon enough according to Sara). It's not confirmed that the Erikssons are immigrants, but they are Latinx living in a predominately white country, which is not easy. And from where we meet Simon in s1, it seems like he had to pick up the pieces of his family from all of these events and make them whole again.
There are two types of parentification: Instrumental and emotional.
Instrumental parentification happens when parents assign their child responsibilities that aren’t age appropriate. We can see this happen with Simon when he's the one finding ways to pay back his tutoring bill. Yes, Linda did question Simon how they were going to pay for it, but we never saw her act further in finding the money to pay Hillerska. We can also see this when Simon goes out to the store in e6 to buy milk, although Linda and Sara are home. An argument could be made that Simon insisted that he go out himself to get it, can't hide from the world forever, but I think that reasoning goes back to him feeling the need to be strong all the time.
Emotional parentification occurs when a child moves in to fulfill specific emotional needs of the parent. The child is expected to figure out the emotional needs of the parent, to respond to the need, and to provide support. I see this a lot in how Linda really leans on Simon to "deal with," for lack of a better word, Sara's attitude. I think this is most obvious in the big fight that Simon and Sara have in e6. It's Simon scolding Sara for her attitude and disrespect towards Linda, instead of Linda herself. And it's Simon who's consistently calling Sara out for the rude things she says. I do not remember a single time when Linda directly confronted Sara about her attitude and the way Sara speaks to her. My mom would never let me get away with talking to her in the way that Sara talks to Linda. It's like Simon is doing all of the scolding to somehow protect Linda from the hurtful things Sara says. Because he couldn't protect her from Micke (just theorizing)
There is also parent-focused parentification or sibling-focused parentification, meaning that a child becomes the primary caregiver for a sibling who is sick or disabled instead of acting like a caregiver to the parent(s).
I'd say that this is where we see parentification the most with Simon. He acts like Sara's older brother and protector, although he is the younger sibling. Yes, siblings should look out for one another, but I think the line between siblings and caregiver is blurry in this instance because of how Simon not only acts as her protector, but also as her critic or judge (for lack of a better word) with how he reprimands her.
Parentification can cause stress, anxiety, emotional detachment, disruptive behaviors and much more in a child.
I hope that in season 2 we see Linda step up as a parent, so that Simon has one thing less to worry about. As great of a mother as she is, always supporting her kids, physically being there for them, and taking cues from them, I think she can take on a more active role as a parent. I think she leans on Simon too much for certain things that she really should be dealing with instead of him.
I know we talk a lot about how Wille has the weight of the world on his shoulders in this fandom, and rightfully so baby's been through a lot, but I don't think we put enough focus on how much Simon has been through as well. They both carry the weight of their own worlds on their shoulders.

Outsiders at the table
Tables are one of the most recurring settings in Young Royals season 1. There is a lot to be said about them, the plate setting, who is allowed at what table, etc., I want to focus however on the idea of an outsider at a table or more specifically how someone can be made to feel as an outsider.
Ayub at Eriksson’s
It is implied that Ayub has been Simon’s friend for a long time. So Ayub eating dinner at Eriksson’s in ep 1 should be a frequent occurrence. But look at his face when Sara lashes out and says, “A mix of losers that will never be anything.” This is his school she is talking about. Sara has her reasons (she was bullied there) to say this but Ayub is left to feel like shit. He is left with the realization that he doesn’t fit in there like he used to, that his friends moved on, moved up.
Simon during workies
In ep 2, We see everyone at these small tables just studying (or watching Simon study if you are Wilhelm) during their workies. Simon seems pretty content at this table, he is a student at this school so he has every right to be there. But then enters August and spits the bullshit, “class, ethnicity doesn’t matter.” You can see the immediate discomfort in Simon as he is made to feel like an outsider at this table. And all he was doing is just studying with his classmates.
Linda on Parent’s day
Linda is having the best time when she comes to Hillerska for the parent’s day lunch. She is proud of her kids, she is chatting with the professors, and just getting to see the school. But of course, August has to come to remind them, “Lunch is not for everyone today.” The difference between Linda and the other examples though is how easily she brushes off this push to make her feel like an outsider. It could be that she is an adult and is better at hiding her feelings but I think this actually shows how Linda was used to being treated this way and she just developed a thicker skin.
Wilhelm at the society
Now the society party night table is the most exclusive table. It is only for the members at the top of the chain and Wilhelm at this point is the Crown prince so he should feel right at home. And he does for most of the night, he has no problem accepting this place at the table that his social status and privilege got him. He is laughing, calling the others friends, and fits right in for the most part. Except, when August starts listing the requirements to be part of this club (Noble and first born). Go watch this scene again carefully and notice Wilhelm here. When August says “Noble,” Wilhelm shows no shame in accepting this privilege, he is counting the requirements with his fingers. But then August says “first-born”, and this is when it hits Wilhelm, his face falls, this is not his place, he is in fact an outsider here. He is not the first-born child, he will never be even if Eric is dead. He realizes he doesn’t care for his place at this table anymore, he just wants to get fucked up and forget everything.
There are other examples too, Wille at his first forest ridge dinner, Simon eating lunch at forest ridge, and Sara eating dinner at Manor house but I think these are more self-explanatory.
I want to see a nice parallel to this in season 2, with Wille at Ericsson’s table and Simon at a table in the palace. (I know one is more likely than the other, but it would be so cool to see Simon in the palace)

Apparently Linda Eriksson’s DNA is catnip for royalty.
And Smysan Ehrencrona is about to offer Linda a large sum of money for a DNA sample, then buy a lab and hire some mad scientists to synthesize whatever creates that catnip. Then forcibly inject it into Felice’s veins.
Smysan’s in her “I want to be the future king’s mother-in-law” villain era.
I don't think this woman ever thought a day in her life that both of her children would be potential royals of Sweden. 😂😂

In episode one where Linda is upset by Sara not having new friends, wanting new riding pants and acting upset. We see one of the first examples of Simon’s need to protect everyone around him. He immediately notices his Mom’s distress and says “We were invited to a party” (even though he knows they technically weren’t) and says that “first years aren’t typically invited but they invited us” (trying to raise his Mom’s spirits while knowing what he actually has to do to get invited to that party). Linda then asks “so things are better than she says?” and Simon who’s all alone at school, who eats alone, gets scoffed at, ignored, and made fun of by the other kids at school pretends that everything is great. Putting his heart on the line for someone else.

What if the next season is in a different perspective!? I know it won’t be but imagine all of this from Simons perspective? More of his mom and his whole and scenes with his sister. More singing. Seeing his side of how he is now dealing with everything, seeing more of his life besides him at his crucial moments and his scenes with Wille. Seeing him while he texts Wille! So many things… feel free to add more

The secrets of the national football team: You did not know about the European Championship stars
CHESTER. The Swedish national football team is in England in search of European Championship gold. But what do we really know about the Swedish stars?Sportbladet has, with the help of people in and around the team, found out things you probably did not know about the players in the team.
Hedvig Lindahl
Has sung the national anthem outside a large food chain in Kristianstad after solemnly proclaiming who she was. Wearing a shirt that is far too short. After all, it was on her honeymoon. Likes to dance when no one is watching but has also danced on car roofs for Billy Idol. Likes to write and is no stranger to taking a stand.
Jennifer Falk
"Falken" likes animals very much and has wondered if she should not get a farm. Until she realized that there is probably a little more work with all the animals than just walking around and petting them. So to the question of what she would work with if she were not a football professional, the answer is not a farmer anyway, but a veterinarian. Then she sits inside a hidden talent, which she at first does not want to reveal. She can make a sound with her mouth. It sounds like a horn and according to her own statement, people usually find it most annoying. If she does not honk a song for children, of course. Then it is always appreciated.
Zecira Musovic
The goalkeeper is happy to clean on match days, but it does not end there. She is also involved when it comes to waste sorting. After moving to England, she has been close to plastering signs to instruct her fellow human beings on how to sort rubbish. Can also play guitar. Something that surprised several of the players when she checked in on the European Championship trip with a guitar case.
Hanna Glas
Keeps order in the collective at the Olympics. A bit of the police in that gang. A person who never has long to a smile. Together with Magdalena Eriksson and Hedvig Lindahl, is the one who spends the most time on video analysis. Loves to tinker with the ball and is one of the best dancers in the national team. A real dancing queen according to her teammates.
Emma Kullberg
She's terribly pedantic. It is not possible to move anything at her home without her discovering it. Not even five inches. She notices that immediately. Is also currently educated and made sure that Filippa Angeldahl and Nathalie Björn went on holiday.
Magdalena Eriksson
Gets stuck very easily in TV series, which often leads to her watching them stretch. Game of Thrones is just one of the series she has been obsessed with in recent years. Ended up in a messy situation when she was going to meet one of her girlfriend Pernille Harder's best friends for the first time. Eriksson would explain that she had not skied in seven years. But we all know that it can be complicated with Danish and it ended with Magda saying that she had not shit in seven years.
Nathalie Björn
The national team's own DJ. Got a DJ outfit as a 25-year present and the one who manages the party at the national team hotel and in the locker room (with the help of Caroline Seger and Zecira Musovic). Her dream job is autopsy and if you ask about a hidden talent, she is happy to show off the mask. A lot of games are played during the national team gatherings as well and it is said that "Nattis" as she is called loves games, but the games do not love her...
Amanda Ilestedt
Appreciates hanging out in nature in her free time when she is at home in Sweden. Has acquired a cottage in his old home areas around Sölvesborg, Also has a hunting degree, although in recent times it has not been used so frequently. Likes to try new dishes, have tried both frogs and snails in Paris.
Linda Sembrant
Is a bastard skating. Sure, it was a while ago now but the midfielder was doing figure skating for seven years and also has a past as a bandy player.
Jonna Andersson
According to information, the strong left-back is more fun than you think. Teammates testify that Andersson is quick in the mouth and has answers to speeches.
Amanda Nilden
Vänsterbacken comes from a real sports family. Little sister Matilda plays in the F-19 national team and AIK in the Damallsvenskan while little brother Charlie is big on TikTok and runs the account Fotboll24. With that in mind, it's not so strange that the choice fell on football, but it's not the only sport that Nildén is good at. She played the Swedish Championships in table tennis when she was younger, so if anyone wants resistance at the ping pong table, challenge Nildén.
Caroline Seger
That the Swedish team captain is a person who wants order and order, no one has missed at this point? Friends are almost afraid to eat when they are at Seger's house, because if they spill or crumble, she is right in front of the vacuum cleaner and cleans away. The most important thing in the pack for England is her nail mat. And chewing gum of course. Victory chews chewing gum constantly and can take one before they get on the bus to the match and spit it out only when the match is over a sisädär 4-5 hours later. Would like to become a police officer after his career.
Kosovare Asllani
Says herself that she is obsessed with her hair. It's the star's man. Very interested in fashion and beauty. Superstitious is the Swedish superstar as well. She must wear something white when she enters the pitch and preferably enters with her right foot first. Be early to test professional life in the US and did not even tell their family, they got to read it in the newspapers. Dreaming of living in New York.
Filippa Angeldahl
Often last down to breakfast with childhood friend Nathalie Björn. Can count to five in Chinese, she thinks at least. Called "Ippe" a nickname that is a variant of Pippi, as the midfielder wanted to be Astrid Lindgren's character as a youngster.
Hanna Bennison
Youngest in the national team. Usually placed next to Caroline Seger in the dressing room. There is a lot of sport in the talent's life and if she gets free time she likes to play basketball or paddle. A bit problematic with the move to England just because there are hardly any paddle courts there ...
Elin Rubensson
In addition to football, Elin Rubensson likes to devote herself to interior design. Some may already know this, considering that she runs an Instagram account with a focus on just that. There is also a piano sometimes and the fact is that Rubensson is good at playing it. She also played the flute when she was young. Another profession, which alludes to the interest in interior design, that Rubensson could imagine is a broker.
Sofia Jakobsson
Interested in fashion. So maybe some people are surprised when teammates testify that Jakobsson keeps a close eye on trees. She can apparently point everyone out. Something her father taught her.Was very good at athletics when she was younger. Above all, long jump, high jump and running, so maybe she could have become a new Carolina Klüft if she had not chosen football. After all, she went to high school in Växjö during Klüft's heyday.
Johanna Rytting Kaneryd
The explosive right rider may be a championship debutant, but she comes in with speed and fan in the gang. She likes to listen to Swedish hip hop and she has two hidden talents. "Jojo", as she is called, can both wave her ears and dance belly dance. If it is European Championship gold, she promises to offer a belly dance.
Stina Blackstenius
A winning skull without equal. Has often ended up in duels with big brother Oscar and little sister Nina. Among other things, there is a scar just above her left eyebrow that testifies to when she would do a jump nod á la Henrik Larsson in the kitchen. It just happened to be a kitchen chair in the way...
Rebecka Blomqvist
As a child, Blomqvist had his career ready for him. She was to become a hockey professional in Germany. Now she is admittedly a professional in Wolfsburg, but not in hockey. And luckily for her, she can barely skate. However, she is good at riding and has competed in horse jumping.
Lina Hurtig
Is according to his own statement not very good at much. At home, it is Mrs. Lisa who is in charge of the food, but it seems that Lina is very helpful when it comes to both cleaning and dishes. Unclear what it would look like at home with the couple Hurtig without her. I like to play golf and would have liked to have become a golf professional if it had not been for football. Driving a car, on the other hand, she is at least the best in the family at. During a trip abroad, Hurtig got a fever. Woke up at 23 completely convinced it was time to check out. If she was met by surprised looks at the reception? Jajamen.
Fridolina Rolfö
The Barcelona star goes to sleep. Rolfö is a connoisseur who likes food and trying new restaurants. Among other things, she has eaten zebra at an African restaurant in Munich, but prefers to avoid caviar. Has a past in banking and may be a future sports director, but we hope it will take a few more years.
Olivia Schough
No one has missed that she can sing, has she? She's obsessed with laughing. If anyone is wondering where she is during a national team gathering, the safest place to look is with the physiotherapists. Schough is said to be the one who spends the most time there, and who does not like a nice massage?

It’s not that Sara isn’t a victim of circumstances. She is. But she’s not only a victim. She has agency in 1.06 and she makes decisions for herself, as well as in other aspects of her life being a victim.
And yes, to get back to the original topic, I do think Sara was definitely attracted to August because he treated her like an adult and didn’t infantilize her. Which her mom and to a lesser extent her brother were doing. But it’s not an excuse.
Sara in 1.06 is fucking complicated. Sara and August as a couple are complicated. In 1.06 in August’s dorm room they circle each other like two apex predators sizing each other up and wondering if they should go in for the kill. And at the same time, Sara is being victimized in other ways.
YRTS: Sara II
ok I have a theory based on what I’m getting from early s1 that Sara might be into August because he’s the only one treating her like an adult who’s capable of making her own decisions and letting her make those decisions without judging her for it. Like, he’s attracted to her, and when she tells him she knows about him leaking it, he assumes it’s a blackmail thing, that she’s capable of that, and asks her what she wants, and is willing to give it to her. I feel like it's going to be one of those "mistreated girl goes for the first guy who doesn't mistreat her (at least in the same way)" situations

Hey! Big fan of your analysis of YR. I was just wondering if what you thought about Simon’s last name being Eriksson. I know I’m reaching here but he has the name “Erik” as his last name. I don’t know why but I keep thinking about this.
Hope you have a great day!
Hello lovely.
I have thought about this a lot and honestly... I have no fucking idea.
If they did that on purpose, that's really cruel. Because that means Wilhelm lost every "Erik" in his life in a matter of months. That would also mean that every person in the show that loved Wille "unconditionally" (Erik, Simon, probably Linda) was named exactly the same. They giveth Eriks, and they taketh Eriks away.
If they didn't do it on purpose, that's a really shitty coincidence. Like surely they didn't overlook that. There are so many other last names they could have given Simon. I have to believe they did that on purpose, and it wasn't just a horrible coincidence.
But as far as I know, the creators of the show have never talked about it, so we really don't know if it was a cruel ode to Wille losing people or if it was just a hilariously overlooked detail.
